Repayment Breakdown
How to Use This Tool
Enter your microfinance loan details in the input fields above. Start with the total loan amount you plan to borrow, then add the annual interest rate from your loan agreement. Select whether your loan term is in months or years, then choose how often you will make repayments (monthly, biweekly, or weekly). Click Calculate Repayment to see your full repayment breakdown, or Reset to clear all fields. Use the Copy Results button to save your calculation to your clipboard.
Formula and Logic
This calculator uses the standard amortization formula to calculate level repayment amounts:
- Periodic Interest Rate = (Annual Interest Rate / 100) / Payments Per Year
- Total Payment Periods = (Loan Term in Years * 12) / 12 * Payments Per Year (adjusted for term unit and frequency)
- Per Period Payment = (Principal * Periodic Rate) / (1 - (1 + Periodic Rate) ^ -Total Periods)
If the interest rate is 0%, the per period payment is calculated as Principal / Total Payment Periods. Total interest is the difference between the total amount repaid and the original principal. The progress bar visualizes the proportion of your total repayment that goes to principal versus interest.
Practical Notes
Microfinance loans often have higher interest rates than traditional bank loans, so small changes in rate can significantly impact total interest paid. Always confirm the exact annual percentage rate (APR) with your lender, as some microfinance institutions include fees in the APR. Biweekly repayments reduce total interest paid compared to monthly repayments, as you make 26 payments per year instead of 12. Use this calculator to compare repayment schedules across different term lengths or frequencies to find an option that fits your budget. Keep in mind that late payment fees are not included in this calculation, so build a small buffer into your budget for unexpected costs.
Why This Tool Is Useful
Microfinance loans are designed for individuals and small businesses that may not qualify for traditional bank financing, but repayment terms can vary widely. This tool helps you avoid overborrowing by showing exactly how much you will pay per period and in total. Financial planners use similar calculations to assess debt-to-income ratios, and loan applicants can use the breakdown to negotiate better terms with lenders. The detailed output lets you see how much of each payment goes to interest early in the loan term, which is common for amortizing loans.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this calculator include microfinance loan fees?
No, this calculator only includes interest charges. Many microfinance loans have upfront origination fees or monthly service fees, which you should add to your principal amount or budget separately for a more accurate estimate.
Can I use this for group microfinance loans?
Yes, as long as you enter the total loan amount for your group and the agreed interest rate. Keep in mind that group loans may have joint repayment terms, so ensure all members are aware of the per-period payment amount.
How accurate is the repayment estimate?
The estimate is mathematically accurate based on the inputs you provide. However, lenders may use different rounding methods for periodic payments, and variable interest rates will change your repayment amount over time. Always confirm final terms with your microfinance institution.
Additional Guidance
Before taking a microfinance loan, compare offers from multiple institutions to find the lowest APR. Use the copy function to save multiple calculations and compare total interest paid across different loan terms. If your budget is tight, opt for a longer loan term to lower per-period payments, but note that this will increase total interest paid. Track your repayments against this calculation to ensure your lender is applying payments correctly, especially for loans with weekly or biweekly frequencies.
